Use your surroundings to your advantage.

This looks pretty safe to me.

Knowing the lay of the land is important in both combat and exploration. Not only does this let you prepare to face anything that comes, but also makes running away quick and easy.

You can exploit cliffs and high ground to gain a vantage point, attacking enemies from above and avoiding any possibility of counterattacks. Obstacles like boulders and trees can be used as cover from enemy strikes and slow enemies down to regroup with your party when needed. Slight advantages can dictate the result of a battle.

So, be aware of your surroundings and strategically use them during battles. You might even find signs of battles or spot ambushes you might have missed otherwise!

Position yourself properly.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Combat Tips positioning yourself.
I think this is a safe distance, right?

Being at the right place at the right time can change the tides of battle, regardless if you are engaging in melee combat or ranged combat. Below are a few pointers on the basics of positioning:

  • Fighters or Warriors often serve as tanks, so you need to stay in front or the middle of enemies to take aggression off your other party members.
  • As a Thief, you will need to be nimble and moving constantly to flank your enemies and avoid counterattacks.
  • As a Mage, Wizard, or Ranger, you will need to keep your distance while dishing out damage or healing your allies. Dying will mean that the efforts of your other party members will go to waste.

By positioning yourself strategically, you can increase your chances of winning and be more efficient against enemies you already know you can beat. This tip also means that you will need to learn the moves of your enemies. Keep these in mind.

Use health and stamina consumables as much as you can.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Combat Tips stamina health items and consumables
Hey, it’s rotten but it heals!

The importance of health and stamina consumables, also known as curatives, cannot be overlooked in Dragon’s Dogma 2. They greatly improve your chances of survival in combat, and time consumed when traveling long distances.

By using consumables efficiently, you can withstand more damage and continue fighting to use more skills or run around and dodge attacks as much as you like.

Common Materials and Ingredients Found

  • Harspud: Restores a small amount of Stamina.
  • Greenwarish: Restores a small amount of Health.
  • Grapes: Restores a small amount of Health.
  • Apple: Restores a bit of Health.
  • Syrupwort Leaf: Combine with other materials.
  • Morningtide: Combine with other materials.
  • Grandpetal: Combine with other materials.
  • Pitywort: Combine with other materials.
  • Cranberry: Recovers a bit of Health.
  • Hill Beech Bark: Combine with other materials.
  • Cinnamon Bark: Combine with other materials.
  • Noonbloom: Combine with other materials.
  • Sunbloom: Combine with other materials.

Having enough stamina to dodge incoming attacks or sufficient health to withstand an attack can completely mean life or death in battle. So, try to maintain enough stamina and health by using and preparing consumables.

Customize your party to fit your preferred style of play.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Combat Tips Pawns, Party, and Playstyle.
Two spellcasters in a team is actually pretty fun!

Customizing your party to match your preferred playstyle is essential, whether that means a well-rounded team or a specialized lineup focused on a specific playstyle. Of course, this also depends on your preference as using a strategy that you do not like drains you of all the fun in combat to be had in Dragon’s Dogma 2.

For instance, prioritize party members with high strength and strong healing if you prefer melee combat. If you prefer a more tactical approach, recruiting members with ranged attacks and more versatile support skills can be more useful.

Building a party that complements your preferred playstyle and strategic preferences will greatly improve your skill to finish combat easily and decisively.

Additional Tip when Choosing Pawns!

You can reset the Pawns you find in the Riftstone by simply exiting it and examining the stone again. You can do this multiple times until you find the Pawn that you want. You may even search specific types of Pawns if you are using a greater Riftstone or anything similar.

High-level Pawns (particularly those higher than your current level) can also be recruited! Don’t scrimp on strong Pawns if you think they will be useful in your adventure. They can even be a great investment later on, joining you longer Pawns recruited at the same level!

Learn what you can do with your chosen Vocation.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Combat Tips vocation weapon
What are these? Are these weapons?

This is honestly the most basic of the basics in Dragon’s Dogma 2 combat: learn what you can do with your chosen Vocation.

Each vocation boasts its unique strengths and talents in battle. For instance, Warriors and Fighters excel in close-quarters combat and control enemies by taking in aggression or using skills to stun or stagger them. Mages and Wizards specialize in skills that unleash devastating spells upon their enemies or help improve their allies’ combat abilities. Finally, Thieves and Rangers excel in dealing damage in their own way by delivering swift and strong strikes.

Quick Dragon’s Dogma 2 Vocations Guide: Basic Vocations

You can change your vocations any time in the game as long as you find a Vocation Guild. So don’t fret too much if you find that the current Vocation you have is not for you.

  • Fighter: Melee vocation focused on taking aggression and holding down enemies. Does physical damage.
  • Archer: Ranged vocation focused on dealing damage or supporting allies using their bow and arrows. Does physical damage but can apply debilitation.
  • Thief: Melee vocation focused on dealing damage and swiftly taking out weaker enemies. Does physical damage.
  • Mage: Ranged vocation focused on dealing damage or supporting allies using various spells. Does magical damage and can use healing or buffing spells.

Through practice and training as well as trials and errors, you will learn the best skills to use in combat and those that suit your play style.
