I’ve played the first Dragon’s Dogma that was released in 2013 and now 7 hours deep into Dragon’s Dogma 2. I won’t give a review of the game nor give any big judgments as of now but there are similarities between the two where you can draw specific guidelines or practices that are sure to keep you prepared and relatively safe.
So, here are 5 Dragon’s Dogma 2 beginner tips to help you on your journey as an Arisen!
Weight affects stamina and jumping height.

Much like other modern action RPGs, Dragon’s Dogma 2 has a weight capacity mechanic that measures the weight of your character; the Arisen. based on the items your character is carrying in your inventory.
The more you carry, the heavier you get. The heavier your character is, the more you consume stamina and jump lower.
Being heavy is not advised because you will have to manage your stamina more. Stamina is important as it lets you reposition, and use your skills. It’s not that your stamina bar becomes smaller, the consumption rate of certain actions just becomes much higher.
The five levels of weight capacity are: Very Light, Light, Average, Heavy, and Very Heavy. If you go past Very Heavy, you will be encumbered and unable to dash, jump, or use combat skills. The weight capacity is also relative to your character strengths or certain physical characteristics you placed on your character when customizing it. You can also use Golden Trove Beetles to increase your weight capacity!
Stamina debuffs from heavy weight capacity also applies to your companions; or so-called Pawns. Therefore, try not to encumber or overcarry your companions as well. Instead, try to distribute the items evenly among your party members. Just be mindful not to lose Pawns that carry important items during travels like a camping kit!
You can safely let borrowed Pawns carry items.

Speaking of distributing items evenly among your companions, items that borrowed Pawns carry will always be returned to you when they die or are replaced.
Of course. Losing Pawns are best avoided, but they aren’t completely avoidable! If your Pawns die in battle (or just from plain clumsiness when traveling), you can find the items you gave them in your storage. Just go to an Inn or your house and look for them.
Knowing this, it should be more encouraging to give heavier or unnecessary items to your Pawns so you can all move and act as freely as possible.
Command Pawns to reposition or retreat from battles.

Movement is very important in Dragon’s Dogma 2. Effective positioning or tactical retreats let you save your time, health, and stamina. So when you are in a fight against a large group of enemies or a strong foe, repositioning or running away is always an option.
To do this effectively and on command, you can always call for your Pawns using the “Go!” command to make them follow you. This works mid-combat, and they will try to disengage to follow your command when you call for them. You may need to spam the command if they are preoccupied such when casting the skills and spells or are locked in battle with groups of enemies or large monsters. So please be patient with your Pawns!
The other commands you can give your Pawns are:
- Go! – Lets your Pawns lead the way toward your quest or a point of interest they found.
- To me! – Calls your Pawns to your location.
- Help! – Calls your Pawns to your location intended to help you. Also works when you are grabbed by enemies, letting them know they should try their best to get you out of trouble.
- Wait! – Tells your Pawns to stand-by and wait for further instructions. They will still fight back when attacked.
I tried this against a raging Cyclops, and it worked, saving my Pawns from dying and getting smashed to bits. Similarly, using these against monsters that cast area of effect skills or spells like Skeleton Mages or a Drake is very useful!
Be mindful of environmental objects and hazards.

Cyclops, Goblins, Harpies, Wolves, and other hostile creatures are not the only dangers you can find in the world of Dragon’s Dogma 2. Environmental hazards and objects can also hurt you if you are not careful.
Environmental objects like boulders and barrels can hit you or explode in your face. Environmental hazards such as blocked rivers or hanging bridges can break apart and put you and your party in great danger. My advise? Avoid fighting on or near these structures, it’s not worth being a daredevil and it is very unlikely that things will go out your way.
So, it is always best to be mindful of your surroundings and avoid environmental objects and hazards.
Environmental objects and hazards are also dangerous for your enemies.

While I did say that environmental objects and hazards should be avoided, you can also try to use them to your advantage. Environmental Objects and Hazards are also dangerous for your enemies.
Enemies hit by rolling or falling boulders get hurt, and barrels can also damage your foes. A sudden rush of waters from blocked rivers can wash away and hurt enemies while hanging bridges can be cut down to make unsuspecting enemies fall to their doom.
You may have seen various videos online showing people luring enemies on these structures, and these are intended features! So always keep on the look out for opportunities to do them. These are some ways to deal with monsters without actually fighting them.
