I’m still playing Monster Hunter Stories 2 Wings of Ruin and I feel like there is SO MUCH MORE TO LEARN!
So, to save new players some time trying to find Monster Hunter Stories 2 tips and tricks to get around the game easier, here are 5 MORE Beginner Tips for New Monster Hunter Stories 2 Players.
Tips in this Post
- You Can Fast Travel From Anywhere
- Approach Enemies from Behind
- Always Forge or Upgrade Equipment
- Carry A Variety of Monsters With Different Attack Preferences and Skills
- Most importantly, have fun!
These are just the some of the basic tips you should try to follow, and they are still useful in the post-game content if you choose to play that as well!
You Can Fast Travel From Anywhere

When Catavan Stands were first introduced, I thought it was a very convenient tool as you essentially have limited fast travel. My biggest fear in Monster Hunter Stories 2 was that I would spend most of my time aimlessly trying to go back to certain areas.
Much to my surprise, Catavan Stands are way more convenient than I imagined them to be. You can actually travel to any Catavan Stand anywhere and anytime.
Just access your map, click on a certain location in the Region Map then travel to it! This may not be a tip for everyone as some may have found this pretty obvious, but not me.
Approach Enemies from Behind

When engaging enemies, instead of approaching them upfront, you can actually have a free first turn in combat by approaching enemies from behind.
I think this is pretty self-explanatory but it must be noted that monsters who have already noticed you will not make this work. You essentially have to sneak behind the monster and make contact with it without grabbing its attention, or having an exclamation mark pop up on its head.
Also, even though I said sneak, you don’t actually have to use the sneak mechanic where your character unmounts and crouch walks to the monster. You can just run up behind a monster while riding your Monstie.
Always Forge or Upgrade Equipment

If you don’t spend time running around too much catching monsters or exploring areas, you will find that Monster Hunter Stories 2 is a fairly quick game. Its longevity is an illusion hidden behind the fun and excitement of acquiring and riding different Monsties, AND THAT’S GREAT GAME DESIGN.
However, if you pay close attention, you will also find that your equipment quickly becomes less effective when you proceed to the next area. Your equipment stats will most likely not be enough to make quick work of your enemies or tank attacks from larger monsters.
Weapons in Monster Hunter Stories 2
- Great Sword: Known for devastating “Charge” skills filling the gauge for powerful attacks.
- Sword & Shield: Balanced offense and defense, featuring elemental skills and a blocking “Counter” ability.
- Hammer: Effective at breaking monster parts, gains power through Head-to-Heads, with “Chaser” abilities.
- Hunting Horn: Optimized for team support with various buffing skills like “Melody” and “Song.”
- Bow: Designed to inflict abnormal statuses, enhancing chances with “Charge” and Power Shot.
- Gunlance: Fires shells, building ammo for powerful attacks and charging the Kinship Gauge for Wyvern’s Fire.
Therefore, always be on the lookout for materials from monsters or the surroundings so that you can quickly upgrade your equipment or get a better one.
Additional Tip!
Monster Hunter Stories 2 battles heavily rely on monster knowledge, so learn their move sets and patterns.
Carry A Variety of Monsters With Different Attack Preferences and Skills

This tip helps you in both exploration and combat.
Exploring the world of Monster Hunter Stories 2, you will find that there are different obstacles and interactable points in the environment. Depending on which Monsties you have, you may be unable to jump over cliffs, break large boulders, or dive through burrows leading to loot chests.
Also, Monsties can only bring two skills. So, be sure to try and bring a variety of Monsties with different skills.
When in combat, having a variety of Monsties also allows you to diversify your attack choices. If you read our previous article; 5 Beginner Tips for Monster Hunter Stories 2 Players, then you will know that this helps you deal the best amount of damage, avoid taking damage, and hasten the fight completely.
Most importantly, have fun!
You know what? Play however you want!
Most of these tips are for beginners that should make playing Monster Hunter Stories 2 easier. BUT! If you find any of these tips unnecessary or too complicated, then don’t follow them.
There is nothing wrong with playing the game how you want. Only choosing Monsties you feel are the cutest? Go ahead! Only want to use heavy weapons like Hammers, Hunting Horns, and Greatswords? That’s perfectly fine as well! You don’t care about stats and just want the cutest armor? Well, I don’t know about that.
There are different ways of going about Monster Hunter Stories 2. So go ahead and preserve your items if you want or catch all the Popos you can find in the world.
At the end of the day, your enjoyment is the most important part of playing Monster Hunter Stories 2.
