Fretless: The Wrath of Riffson First Impressions
I enjoyed this one a lot. Fretless: The Wrath of Riffson is a music-themed pixel RPG with cool rhythm mechanics that really elevate its turn-based combat. The visuals aren’t realistic at all, which might turn some people away, but I really urge anyone who enjoys turn-based games to give this a shot.
Fretless: The Wrath of Riffson Gameplay
In the demo, you pick up different string-based instruments. So far, I’ve picked up an acoustic guitar and a bass. Each instrument has different riffbooks — basically your combat abilities. Riffbooks contain different riffs you can use in battle: attacks, barriers, buffs, or removing debuffs. Each instrument also has unique riffs that match its theme, which is pretty cool.

The acoustic guitar is simple: you hit enemies and shield yourself — very basic but solid. The bass guitar is more interesting. It lets you stack up “slaps” that boost certain attacks, and its whole combat style revolves around using barriers too.
When attacking, basic riffs have timing mechanics — if you click your mouse at the right time, the attack gets stronger. Same thing when you’re being attacked — block at the right time to reduce damage taken.
There’s also an ultimate ability for each instrument. When you trigger it, a rhythm mini-game kicks in — kind of like Audition, O2 Jam, or DJMax. You have to hit the right directional buttons on time to get the full effect.
Besides riffs, you can also add mods to your instruments: pickups, strings, and accessories. Each slot gives you effects like barriers at the start of combat, extra buffs, and so on. Then there are Pedals — honestly, I don’t know what those are in real life (I don’t play instruments) — but they work like mods and give extra effects too.
All in all, the combat system is super unique and honestly just really fun.
Fretless: The Wrath of Riffson ART (Graphics and MUSIC)

The art style is a mix of digitally hand-drawn cutscenes and pixel-based gameplay. The cutscenes look like classic Newgrounds animations — simple but stylish and full of personality. It matches the game’s light, casual tone really well.
In-game, it’s pixel art, similar to Dave The Diver, Dead Cells, or Crawl. Even with this style, it looks detailed and really pleasing to look at.
Music is obviously a big part of it too. During combat, the soundtrack changes depending on your instrument — if you’re using the acoustic, you hear acoustic strumming. If you switch to bass, you get bass riffs instead. Boss fights take over with their own heavier tracks, which works both as an art detail and as part of the gameplay feel.
Fretless: The Wrath of Riffson STORY (NPC AND SETTING)
The story is pretty ridiculous in a fun way — you want to join a Battle of the Bands, but things aren’t exactly what they seem. Different characters pop up, each with their own weird quirk or story bit. There’s not much to dig into yet, but I did see one fun cameo: Davie504 shows up, which was cool if you know him from YouTube.
Is Fretless: The Wrath of Riffson A Good Game? Is Fretless: The Wrath of Riffson Worth it?
Honestly, yes — Fretless: The Wrath of Riffson is good if you enjoy turn-based RPGs and want something fresh. The rhythm mechanics add a fun twist to the usual formula, and the whole vibe is light, quirky, and music-themed in a way that works well.
If you like rhythm games, weird music gimmicks, or just want to try something different from the usual fantasy RPG stuff, then Fretless: The Wrath of Riffson is worth checking out. The demo alone is a good sign that the full game will be a fun, unique little ride..
