Silent Hill 2 First Impressions

Silent Hill 2 got a remake after 20 long years and fans of the series, as well as general horror fans are ecstatic for its release. The classic horror series was a well-established video game franchise but died out in 2014 when Silent Hill P.T. directed by Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro was cancelled.

It took about another 10 years before a new Silent Hill title came out and it’s safe to say the reception wasn’t good. After the success of remakes becoming a trend such as Resident Evil 2 (2019), Resident Evil 4 (2023), and Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020), someone somewhere must have gotten the idea of creating a Silent Hill 2 remake and they actually pushed through with it!

The remake of Silent Hill 2 (not the Silent Hill 2 Enhanced Edition) was officially announced in October 2022, developed by Bloober Team, published by Konami Digital Entertainment, and then released on 8 October 2024. Its widespread acclaim and is set to be one of the best games this year, much like how Alan Wake 2 took everyone by storm in 2023.

Anyway, I played Silent Hill 2 (2024) and here are my first impressions during my first hours of gameplay!

Silent Hill 2 Gameplay

A2

As someone who played and owned a couple of horror games in the early 2000s under the PlayStation 1, I was well aware of the gameplay trend and design of horror games that time.

Most games back then were fixed camera survival horror with limited combat options mostly due to limitations of hardware and game development tech back then.

Games back then boasted their ability to deliver compelling story while having simple gameplay mechanics.

As such, Bloober Team was able to bring back that style of play by allowing players to explore Silent Hill with limited fighting capabilities.

So far, I like how they did it and the biggest difference is the camera in the remake which is now an over-the-shoulder camera rather than a fixed camera like before. This may feel weird and unnerving for others but this is a welcome change for me.

Silent Hill 2 Enemies and Level Design

A5

While combat is not complex, there were a notable amount of enemies in the original version of the game.

The enemies found in the game focus more, again, on storytelling and backstory which help create more meaning to the world and combat encounters.

In the first few hours, you will only find one type of enemy and it is pretty scary. The better graphics of this generation help hit home the fear and horror that the original creators of the game wanted to bring.

As for the level design, the game brings back most of how Silent Hill was constructed in the 2001 version.

There are changes to locations and entryways, but they are mostly still there. In fact, locations in the 2001 version are often referenced through the Glimpses of the Past mechanic which allows players to check familiar locations or objects then a flashing effect occurs.

Silent Hill 2 Story, NPCs, and Setting

I absolutely love the story and so far, everything is very much a mystery to me.

A6

The place you can get most of the story from is the letter James Sunderland, the protagonist, reads from in the introduction sequence. This lets you know that James went back to Silent Hill to find his wife Mary, and that is pretty much it in the intro.

Further story elements can be learned from notes found everywhere in Silent Hill and in cutscenes as the story progresses.

Still, a large part of it will remain a mystery unless you continue the game and most notes just give subtle hints or backstory. Oftentimes, notes may even make no sense unless you piece things together—especially in the early area of the game.

Special Mention: Silent Hill 2 Graphics

Thanks to how technology has passed, the graphics are stunningly amazing. It’s realistic but not to the point where they absolutely look real, but there is some level of “uncanny valley-ness” to the characters. However, this is not like the Polar Express type of uncanny valley where it looks creepy and wrong.

The way Bloober Team was able to recreate the fog mechanic of the original Silent Hill was great and well-executed that the eerie atmosphere and feel remained the same—at least for me.

Is Silent Hill 2 A Good Game? Is Silent Hill 2 Worth it?

Absolutely. I suck at horror games but Silent Hill 2 is definitely a masterpiece. Sure it’s pricey but for a good reason. Fans of horror, the original version, and of the franchise must play this game and should be thankful to the Bloober Team that they were able to make it this good. Of course, it’s just first impressions so far but I am confident in what I have seen so far.
