S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl First Impressions
I’ve never played any of the old S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games before, so it came as a bit of a surprise when a post-apocalyptic game similar to Fallout suddenly popped up on my radar near the end of 2024. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl was released on November 20 last year, and from the start, I had my expectations set pretty high.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl Gameplay
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl—which we’ll just call STALKER 2 from here on to keep it simple—uses a first-person survival approach in its gameplay.
It puts realism at the center, but not in the same way games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim or Fallout do. On top of that, there’s no leveling system that gives you perks, abilities, or stat boosts. Instead, the main focus of STALKER 2 is on your survival skills, items, and your ability to aim and shoot. Your success depends more on what you do and how well you adapt to the Zone, rather than any numbers on a skill tree

In STALKER 2, guns and clothing need to be properly maintained, or else your character becomes more vulnerable to gun jams, environmental hazards, and other setbacks.
That said, many Fallout fans might still enjoy STALKER 2, as it takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of Ukraine called the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone—most people just call it the Zone. But more on that later.
Players—referred to as Stalkers by the community—will have to manage more than just weapons and gear. You’ll need to eat, drink, sleep, and keep radiation levels down. These survival needs can feel overwhelming for first-time players, especially when just starting out in the world of STALKER 2.
And if that’s not enough, Stalkers also have to deal with deadly mutants and unpredictable Anomalies.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl Enemies and World Design
As previously mentioned, Stalkers must face more than just other people in the Zone.
The Chernobyl Exclusion Zone—formed after the Chernobyl explosion and filled with radiation—hosts some of the most unique threats in the world, including mutants and Anomalies.
Mutants are creatures born from radiation, and each type behaves differently. This means Stalkers have to adjust their tactics depending on what they’re facing. From simple Fleshers and Snorks to the more dangerous Pseudogiants and Chimera, STALKER 2 constantly reminds you to keep your weapon ready at all times.

One of the most unique features of the STALKER franchise is its use of Anomalies. These are strange environmental phenomena scattered throughout the Zone. Some can harm you instantly, while others might be useful—depending on how you interact with them.
Together, mutants and Anomalies help STALKER 2 blend its dark theme and dangerous setting into the gameplay in a seamless and immersive way.
Yet let’s step back from the gameplay and simply look at how the game presents itself and makes you feel. STALKER 2 features a vast and amazing world filled with things to explore and interact with. The visuals are bleak, yet eerily alive—thanks to the dynamic nature of the Anomalies and the weather.
One of the biggest weather hazards you’ll face is the Emission—a powerful, storm-like surge of energy that kills anything caught in the open. The only way to survive it is by hiding underground or inside a safely enclosed space. Emissions, along with Anomalies, Mutants, and radiation, all come together to create a world that’s both deadly and thrilling to explore.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl Story, and NPCs
Now, there’s more to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise than just its setting and unique take on the Chernobyl disaster. It actually has a compelling overarching story across several games, deep lore, and a number of memorable characters—some of whom are considered legends or myths, both inside and outside the Zone.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl takes place about a decade after S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat. The game begins with your character returning home to his apartment, only to find it destroyed by a strange piece of rock, no bigger than a USB flash drive.

This event sends your character on a hunt to uncover what this object is, eventually leading you back into the Zone with help from a sketchy scientist. From there, your journey begins. There’s definitely more to it, but that’s all the game reveals at the start.
As for the NPCs, the first people you meet are Richter and Professor Hermann. Both are mysterious, and it’s unclear early on whether they’ll play a bigger role later in the story.
In the first hour or so, no character really stands out just yet—but the atmosphere, story setup, and gameplay are more than enough to keep you hooked.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl Optimization
Last in our least is S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl’s optimization. How smooth is the gameplay? Did I experience stutters? Were there hitches in the performance?
Sadly, yes.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl on its release was bogged down by its subpar performance which took a toll on many who truly wanted to enjoy the game. Newcomers who thoroughly loved the gameplay and setting were heavily discouraged to continue playing due to the sudden framedrops—which would last indefinitely unless the player restarts the game—and crashes.
Is S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl A Good Game? Is S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl Worth it?
Absolutely yes. It is a good game with great gameplay loop, setting, and visuals. Is it worth it? That depends. Do regular framedrops and crashes bother you? Then maybe no, but if you can get over that, then S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl might be the game for you.
