Put A Spring in Thy Step walkthrough

When walking past Drabnir’s Grotto toward the Agamen Volcanic Island, you may encounter an old dwarf standing in the middle of the road, hunched over and holding his back.

Speak to this dwarf, whose name is Gautsatfr, and at first, he is cautious. He then explains that his back is aching and mentions that he wouldn’t mind receiving some “wildflowers” that could ease his pain.

Find some Wildflowers

The “wildflowers” Gautsatfr is referring to are herbs, leaves, and flowers you can find all over Vermund and Battahl. These “wildflowers” can be Pitywort, Greenwarish, Morningtide, and such.

If you already have three of any of these in your inventory, give them immediately to Gautsatfr. If you don’t have any, look around the immediate area to gather three “wildflowers.” Return to Gautsatfr and deliver the “wildflowers.”

Gautsatfr thanks you for the trouble and uses the items you gave on himself. The “wildflowers” seem to do the trick, and the dwarf is relieved from his back pain.

Afterward helping Gautsatfr, he suggests that you look for him at his house.

You can choose to follow Gautsatfr back to his home or go elsewhere and return to his house some other time. Gautsatfr’s house is on a very small island just north of where you found him. A path leading to Gautsatfr’s home should be found right past a campfire behind where you found him initially.

Visit Gautsatfr’s Home

Approaching Gautsatfr’s home triggers a cutscene where a female elf named Cliodhna walks out cautiously, but Gautsatfr introduces her to you. He explains that you were invited to visit him. However, Cliodhna expresses concern about Gautsatfr inviting strangers to their home. Gautsatfr tries to reassure her, mentioning that you are the true Arisen destined to defeat the dragon.

Despite Gautsatfr’s explanation, Cliodhna remains skeptical and leaves you with him. Gautsatfr apologizes but still welcomes you into his home. He then goes to get your reward for helping him.

Following Gautsatfr inside his home, you hear his pained moaning. Cliodhna scolds Gautsatfr for not being careful, but he insists that no amount of gentleness will prevent his back pain from returning.

Gautsatfr says that the only remedy for his pain is a “curative spring,” but Cliodhna warns him that the way to it is filled with monsters. She considers taking him there but ultimately dismisses the idea.

After their short quarrel, speak to Gautsatfr and you can offer to take him to the spring, continuing the quest. Gautsatfr then taunts Cliodhna, reiterating how you are a kindhearted individual. Cliodhna responds with doubt and annoyance but accepts your offer to take Gautsatfr to the spring.

Escort Gautsatfr to Geyser Hamlet

Now, you need to escort Gautsatfr to the spring in Volcanic Island Camp. Gautsatfr will be walking slower than other NPCs so you will need to defend him until you reach your destination.

Before leaving Gautsatfr’s home, you can pick up a Newt Liqueur on a table in his house. Also, walk too fast or too far from Gautsatfr, and he will stop you, complaining that you should walk slower.

Once you arrive at Geyser Hamlet, Gautsatfr will thank you and head straight to the hot spring. After he leaves, Cliodhna appears and expresses gratitude for your help.

It turns out Cliodhna followed you to ensure Gautsatfr’s safety and to confirm her suspicions. Fortunately, you proved to be the good person her husband believed you to be. She explains that her skepticism stems from facing constant persecution due to their unusual pairing—a dwarf and an elf.

Because of this persecution, Cliodhna and Gautsatfr live far from cities or towns. She’s relieved that her husband’s trust in you was justified and invites you to visit their home again.

Additionally, Cliodhna offers her expertise as a Magick Archer-Master and Gautsatfr’s skills as a blacksmith. With this, the quest Spring in Thy Step concludes.
